In case you didn't know, Mr Benn is a very ordinary man who lives on a very ordinary street, but a man who has a secret; when he goes to the costume shop on his street he not only dresses as a character but he enters that character's world for a day. This leads to all manner of fantastical adventures where he has a go at being a balloonist, a conjuror, an astronaut and a king, amongst others. In this book Mr Benn becomes a gladiator for a day and is caught up in an adventure where he has to find an alternative to fighting in order to survive. The story is great but it was the nostalgia-inducing drawings that really sold this book to me.
