| Customer Reviews: Wickedly funny, utterly refreshing February 14, 2008 C. F. S. Partridge (London, England) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
Wickedly funny, utterly refreshing, perfect for anyone who loves fashion but who still has a proper sense of humour. Hadley Freeman writes with wit and style about the perils and delights of boots and bathing suits, the dos and don'ts of clutch bags and cleavages, the highs and lows of vanity (high) and velvet (definite, rock-bottom low). It's an absolute celebration of a world that is gorgeous and wonderful at the same time as being utterly ridiculous, and she captures its spirit perfectly - for example, in the affectionately scathing section on `Fashion speak' (in which `homage' is exposed as a blatant euphemism for `rip-off') or the bit on `Karl Lagerfeld, and why he's so wonderful' (number one being that he's so fantastically rude, although she puts it a bit more bluntly than that...). Sharp, chatty, slick and catty - an absolute blast of fresh air. I can't recommend this enough.
wonderfully bitchy February 16, 2009 F. Deans (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Very funny and bitchy, compulsive reading. It also has some really good style tips.
wicked and wise February 1, 2010 We Love Books (UK) Altogether now - how do fashion megabrands cajole us into spending so much on shoes and handbags - 'because shoes and handbags will never make us feel fat'!
Hadley incisively pins down that so much behind fashion and beauty marketing is that it can make us closer to those two holy grail states of being (as determined by the same said industries) - Thinner And Younger.
Once she points this out, so much falls into place. We don't need to fall for this and feel guilty if we were are not doing our utmost to be those things - why are they 'better' in the first place - instead Hadley opens up our world to enjoying fashion because it can be beautiful and fun. If you like her columns in the Guardian you will like this, and if you hate fashion and feel it is shallow, evil and manipulative, then you should read this too - that is just fashion marketing - fashion itself is art you get to wear on a daily basis. Also bloody funny.
Should be handed out to every woman on their 18th birthday... May 15, 2009 J. M. Williamson The Meaning of Sunglasses starts out as an incredibly entertaining, sharply written, witty and stylish waltz through planet fashion. A bit of fun - because after all, it's only clothes, right? But what Hadley Freeman does, without recourse to ranting or diatribe, is actually raise some really interesting issues about women, self esteem, what we think we're saying about ourselves when we get dressed in the morning, what we actually are saying, and why it's ok to buy something nice for yourself if you can afford it and it makes you happy. You'll definitely learn something about yourself reading this book (and you'll laugh out loud while you do), even if it's that you shouldn't wear mittens if you're over 8 years old.
More please ! March 13, 2009 Ponytail (UK) If you think you'd appreciate clever fashion writing, get this book. A collection of short essays on different aspects of the fashion world/business, it's funny, sharp, intelligent and the author doesn't shy away from revealing some of the more negative aspects of being this interested in style.
